Shyira Rwanda Disaster Fund

Donation protected
As the world is at a standstill, nature continues. Shyira is a sector in the Nyabihu District of Western Province of Rwanda that has been one of the hardest-hit areas of the recent flooding and landslides that led to a loss of 75 lives, 3000 hectares of planted farmland, 124 road sections, and 64 bridges.

East African Power (EAP) has been working in Shyira for 5 years and has grown very close with the incredible people of this community where 380 families have lost their homes.
EAP’s mission is not only to provide affordable and clean energy but to partner and care for the people in the communities, we work in. We have the infrastructure and the systems in place to help these people in need, but we need your help during the weeks ahead. With these funds raised, we will be able to provide income to the families that need it most, to rebuild homes, stabilize slopes, and bring families a sense of security in these dark times. Together we can build a brighter future for these families.

In Shyira alone, there are 1534 Rwandans homeless. 14 different areas were impacted within 6 cells where 380 houses lost. The $10,000 raised will go to serve the needs of 120 specific families that are currently residing at the GS Vunga School near EAP’s Rubagabaga Hydropower Plant. EAP will be matching all donations raised up to the 10,000 CAD goal.
To maximize the relief efforts, the families have proposed providing paid working opportunities to help to rebuild the community areas (school) and houses affected of the most vulnerable. We will maximize the number of jobs provided and provide them with the necessary tools to do so. The 120 families living at the GS School are in tremendous needs, living 5 families to a classroom with each family having access to as little as one straw mat, one blanket, and getting daily rations for their survival. The Government is doing an excellent job of providing the basics and mobilizing as many partners as possible to help rebuild their homes. EAP is working in close partnership and under the direction of the Nyabihu District for this work.
