On February 19, 2023, James was rushed to the ER and was unresponsive. He was transferred to University Hospital in Columbia, Missouri, and placed in the ICU. He is in critical condition, in a medically-induced coma, with meningitis and multiple other issues.
James Oberle retired from the US Army on January 31, 2023, after serving for 21 years. He deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan on multiple tours and is a Purple Heart recipient. Recently, he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for contributions to the MP Core.
James works with the Office of Emergency Management and the Waynesville Rural Fire Protection District in Pulaski County, Missouri.
He is a terrific father to his six-year-old son, Benjamin, and 15-month-old daughter, Edith. He and his wife, Allison, will celebrate eight years of marriage this September. James coaches little league and volunteers with the American Red Cross, and tries to make a difference in the lives of everyone he meets.
In addition to the above, Allison’s father passed away on January 30, then two days later, her maternal grandmother passed. This has been a challenging time emotionally, as well as financially, for the family as they had to travel to Louisiana and spend two weeks there.
This is a unique situation because James is waiting on his retirement and just received his disability rating the day before he was hospitalized. VSO has confirmed he will not receive a VA paycheck until April or May.
