Sensei Gary Koan Janka has courageously battled Parkinson’s disease for the past several years. An active member of ZCLA and officiating priest of the Santa Barbara Zen Center, Sensei Koan is a valued friend, teacher, and source of inspiration to many in the Zen community.
In the past 10 days Sensei’s health has deteriorated very quickly; his family is now unable to safely manage his care at home. Koan needs the immediate support of an assisted living facility where he can receive 24-hour medical care, physical therapy and support for activities of everyday life.
This Go Fund Me is an appeal for bridge funding. Sensei Koan has a form of long-term care insurance that will be available to help offset expenses starting in six months, but until that policy becomes active, he and his family are in very, very difficult financial circumstances.
The cost of assisted living exceeds $6,000 per month. Any and all funds contributed will go directly to the assisted living facility to offset those costs. Gifts of any size - starting now and extending through July - would be of incredible value and help in providing care for Koan.
