I'm Robert Griffin (CBS class of '92 and Mrs. Griffin's son). To anyone who attended Central Baptist Church or Central Baptist School before he retired and moved to Iowa in 2009, here’s your first look at Mr. Mahan in 15 years! I went to see him this past weekend; he’s 82 now and as you’d expect, he walks slower because his balance is a little wobbly, he has even less hair, and his hearing is even worse(!), but he’s still Mahan.
However, I think he needs our help. I'm not going into detail, but nearly 40 years of working for a church and small Christian school left him with a retirement nest egg that was modest at best, and with the increased cost of living over the years, plus buying a new furnace for his home last year and needing a new AC unit this year, that retirement fund is extremely strained. While he doesn’t have biological kids who can step in and help, there are multiple hundreds of kids (and parents of those kids) whose lives were forever impacted by Mr. Mahan and WE can help.
Each of us has a favorite Mahan story. If he ever called you a twit; if you still remember the taste of his spaghetti and Texas toast; if he ever led your chapel service in singing “The Long Song;” if he ever gave you a second chance instead of expelling you (you know who you are); then you can thank him now for impacting your life by donating to this GoFundMe account. Anything helps as we’re trying to set him up financially long-term, but can you give $100? $500? $1000? More?
For those who attended the CBS 50th Anniversary dinner in January, remember how disappointed you were when you found out he wasn’t there? Whether you’re a wealthy entrepreneur or a coupon-clipping carpooler, this is your chance to help the guy who meant that much to you. Regardless of what you give, please pray for him right now and keep him on your prayer list.
Let me know if you have questions. Thanks!
