On the night of June 10th Gerry suffered a stroke in the posterior part of his brain (the brain stem). At age 49, and a retired firefighter, Gerry was lucky enough to recognize the symptoms early and knew he was having a stroke... this allowed the paramedics and Emergency Room doctors to treat him quickly. Despite this and because of the location of the stroke, which  has a very low survival rate, the damage was life changing. Gerry spent two weeks in the Critical Care Unit at Hartford Hospital where he began his intensive recovery. He suffered left side paralysis which affected his vision, swallowing, speaking and movement. But, in true Gerry fashion- he was determined to get better and GO HOME!!!

Gerry remained at Hartford Hospital for six weeks with ongoing OT/PT and speech therapy. He has regained some movement on the left side,  is eating and swallowing, and has improved vision and speech. However, this is just the beginning of his recovery!

Gerry has been moved to a rehab facility and is preparing to go home in as early as three weeks!!!  Although this is great news, it comes with a price! Gerry is expected to remain out of work as a mechanic at RH White for six months to one year. Gerry and AnneMarie's house needs work to be made handicap accessible, including a full bathroom on the first floor that Gerry can access with ease. Gerry will also need ongoing care, in addition to what insurance will cover once he is home.
