Today, the news reported vandalism of Jewish grave sites at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Philadelphia. Not only does this display of hatred hurt me as a person, but even more so as the granddaughter of Holocaust survivors. Some people argue that anti-semitism does not exist anymore. I wish that were true. My grandmother fought for decades; sharing her story and proving that we can find light in the darkness. We cannot erase the pain of hate acts, but we can add our positive story to it. Instead of turning a blind eye, let's show love.
I teach Fifth Grade Reading and Social Studies to wonderful groups of students. Mt. Carmel Cemetery is 15 minutes from our school. Every year, I tell them constantly that they have the ability to make a positive change in their community. This is a way for us to show them, and the surrounding community, that love is stronger.
Please help me raise money to donate to the cemetery to restore the resting places of many family members of our larger community.
All money will be donated directly to the cemetery by myself and my students, as a way to show love after an act of hatred.
