Short-term Memory Care Stay for Mary
Donation protected
Brandon's mom, Mary, was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's Dementia just over a year ago. She moved in with us in November 2021. I've tried to sit down and write out a full summary, but I can't. This has been one of the most stressful and mentally devastating/ exhausting things we've ever had to do.
We are beyond burnt out and are starting to experience the physical effects of stress. Brandon had a cancer scare (turns out he's just so stressed that his liver enzymes are just ridiculously unhealthy). No matter how much privilege and knowledge of the healthcare system we have, our system is too broken to get someone below the poverty line the care they need.
Brandon and I have multiple trips this summer that are non-negotiable and we need to send her to a memory care facility for a short-term stay during those trips.
We would greatly appreciate it if anyone could help defray the cost of a short term stay at an assisted living memory facility. A stay is about $2400 per week, depending on the facility. Mary is below the poverty line and cannot afford the cost (and our broken healthcare system won't reimburse for memory care). We cannot cover the cost of multiple stays on our own either.
We are on the wait-list for multiple respite care grants but there's simply a shortage of funding. Even then, most only cover in-home care during the day. The one grant that covers short-term stays is only $1000 if we can even get approved in time.
We are at wits end, sacrificing our early 30s to care for Mary. With limited support from family we're unable to travel, even when required by work. Any contribution helps us get to relax and get some time away.
All funds will go toward respite stays at a local memory facility.
Thank you!
