Short Documentary Film: Honoring WW2 Hero Raymond Cole

Hello!

My name is Alice, and together with my friend Philippe, we are two history students at King's College in London who have embarked on a journey to create a short documentary about Pfc. Raymond A. Cole, an American soldier from the 2nd Ranger Battalion, F Company, who lost his life on D-Day while scaling the cliffs at Pointe du Hoc.

Since I was young, my brother Antoine and I have visited Raymond’s grave to place flowers—a tradition passed down to us by my aunt, Marie-Pascale Legrand. In the 1980s, she met Raymond's close friends, Thomas Ryan and Bill O'Keefe, when they returned to Normandy for D-Day commemorations. They entrusted her with a simple but profound promise: to honor their friend Raymond by tending his grave indefinitely at the American Cemetery of Colleville-sur-Mer.

Philippe and I are making this documentary to share Raymond's story as widely as possible, compiling all the information we uncover to illuminate his life and sacrifice so that he is never forgotten. We also want to convey how his legacy has impacted our own lives and granted us the privilege of living in a free country.

The film will be an exploration of memory, honor, and the enduring connection between the living and the fallen.

Our journey will span oceans and archives—from the quiet village of Bude, England, where Raymond trained before the Normandy invasion, to the United States, where we will research his life through records at the National Archives in Maryland.

We would be deeply grateful for any support to help fund our travels to the United States and Cornwall in the UK (for flights, accommodations, and car rental) and for post-production costs such as an original score and editing software.

Je m'appelle Alice, et avec mon ami Philippe, nous sommes deux étudiants en histoire a King's College à Londres qui se sont lancés dans un projet de documentaire sur Pfc. Raymond A. Cole, un soldat américain du 2ème battaillon de Rangers, Compagnie F, tombé le jour du Débarquement en escaladant les falaises de la Pointe du Hoc.

Depuis mon enfance, avec mon frère Antoine, nous visitons la tombe de Raymond et y déposons des fleurs—une tradition transmise par ma tante, Marie-Pascale Legrand. Dans les années 1980, ma tante a rencontré les meilleurs amis de Raymond, Thomas Ryan et Bill O'Keefe, lorsqu'ils sont revenus en Normandie pour les commémorations du Débarquement. Ils lui ont confié une promesse simple mais profonde : honorer leur ami Raymond en fleurissant sa tombe pour toujours, au cimetière américain de Colleville-sur-Mer.

Philippe et moi avons décidé de réaliser ce documentaire pour partager l'histoire de Raymond avec le plus grand nombre, rassembler et documenter toutes les informations découvertes pour mettre la lumière sur sa vie et son sacrifice, afin qu'il ne soit jamais oublié. Nous voulons aussi montrer comment son héritage a façonné nos vies et nous a offert le privilège de vivre dans un pays libre.

Le film sera une exploration de la mémoire, de l'honneur et du lien indéfectible entre les vivants et les disparus.

Notre périple nous mènera au-delà des océans et des archives—du paisible village de Bude, en Angleterre, où Raymond s'est entraîné avant l'invasion de Normandie, jusqu'aux États-Unis, où nous plongerons dans les archives nationales du Maryland pour reconstituer les détails de sa vie civile et militaire.

Nous serions extrêmement reconnaissants pour toute aide qui nous permettrait de financer notre voyage aux États-Unis et en Cornouailles au Royaume-Uni (billets d'avion, logement, location de voiture) ainsi que le matériel de post-production, comme une bande son originale et un logiciel de montage.
