If that doesn't describe my friend Shirley, and the strength she has shown I don't know what will. Unfortunately Shirley was recently diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma; and if you are like myself, and not a doctor that is, what that means is she had an extremely aggressive form of breast cancer. I am thrilled to use the term 'had' because on the 18th of April she underwent surgery which removed all of the cancer!!
As we all know with this horrific disease that however was not the end of Shirley's treatment. She since is in the process of 4 chemo treatments two times a week right now and then will have 12 weeks of weekly chemo treatments, which will follow with 6 weeks of radiation 5 times a week. This course of treatment is not easy by any means, but it does bring her odds from a 55% recovery without the treatments to over 90% with it. Shirley being the brilliant woman we know her to be of course chose the tougher, and more painful treatment to heighten her chances of kicking this cancer's butt.
Shirley has been a server most of her life most recently working at the Pool & Yacht Club in Lillydale after working at Southview Country Club for ten years. She is incredibly strong, and hardworking but there is a softie underneath that tough shell :) .. and that is shown by her tremendous amount of love and devotion to her family. She is one of 6 children, has a daughter, a son, and two beautiful grandchildren. She told me "Her passion is her grandchildren" and I sure know why.
The day Shirley went to the doctor had been the first nice day in a long while in Minnesota so she really, and I mean really did not want to go in. Something however, and thank god for it was pushing her toward that appointment and in the right direction because even one week later we would be living a whole different story. She has been more tired than normal but luckily has not experienced much sickness since beginning her treatments, so she is in high hopes, and honestly just cant wait to get back to work - classic Shirley :)
If you can find it in your heart to donate anything at all to Shirley to help her offset the enormous amount of medical bills she will soon be facing it would mean the absolute world. If the tables were turned we all know she would be the first person by your side to help in their time of need.
