Shipwrecked - Sailboat Restoration
Donation protected
Hello! As some of you may know, my dad was shipwrecked and rescued off the coast of La Push, Washington in March of 2021.

He had been waiting out a gale warning and by the time they realized the boat was taking on water, they had ten minutes before it went under. Flooding had caused all of the electrical to go out so they could not radio for help or send their coordinates. One shipmate still had has cellphone on him as all three of them were huddled on the navigation bridge. He dialed 911 with minutes to spare and even though they were five miles off shore, he miraculously had signal and got through to a dispatcher, barely able to get out the words, "send the Coast Guard now! We're going under!" Without coordinates, my dad wondered if they would be found and he recalled that he thought to himself "Huh, so I'm not going to die of old age." All three men were treading water without life jackets on (keep your life jackets accessible folks!) when they were rescued. They were sent to the nearest hospital with acute hypothermia and all three recovered and were released. It is the best outcome one can imagine in a situation like this but with that said...
He lost everything he had.

My dad has been a boat captain all of his working life-- from fishing boats in Alaska to chartering yachts in Mexico. It is all he knows and is what he loves. He currently does not have a home. Where he stays has no drinkable water, refrigeration, or working toilets. I personally consider these things the bare necessities of living but he lives without and makes do. His needs are few and he gets by but as he is approaching 76 this year I would like to somehow make his dreams of sailing again come true. As he mentioned to me on our last visit, he isn't getting any younger and he would like to be out on the open waters again (shipwreck be damned), he has never been too crazy about the landlocked life.

As it so happens, we came upon an abandoned sailboat. It has been docked alone for about 5 years now begging to be taken out to sea again and is officially ours. This 1977 sloop rig Catalina 27 is floating and has much potential to be sea-worthy once more but not without quite a bit of work. It was built in California and currently has outboard propulsion but an inboard electric motor would be ideal. The labor will mostly fall on our family and of course my dad who is skilled in all things boat related -painting, sanding, varnishing, and all matter of fixing. With all that said it needs about $5,000 worth of help. I don't expect to get anywhere near that but any part of that goal will help.
If for any reason you feel so inclined to donate and help on old guy live out his golden years doing what he loves, we would be forever grateful!
