The Shipibo Indigenous Community of San Francisco, near Pucallpa - Ucayali in the Peruvian Amazon is under great threat these days due to the combination of an existing Dengue epidemic with the Covid-19 pandemic. Both Dengue and Covid-19 produce similar symptoms, generating confusion among the indigenous community members, who are in desperate need of funds to satisfy basic nutritional needs for the neediest families in the community. During the Peruvian national lockdown, food prices have surged in markets, and money is running short, especially for this Shipibo community that greatly dependent on tourism and art sales.
Community member artist and Onaya ("chaman") Rawa Muñoz is putting together this international campaign in alliance with artist friends to raise emergency funds. In the Peruvian Amazon, things are more expensive during "normal" times. During these combined epidemics the lack of supply and the high prices are threatening the lives of indigenous communities on a third front, hunger. Money from this campaign will be used to secure and transport food from Pucallpa to the San Francisco indigenous community.
My name is Nicolás Kisic Aguirre, I'm a friend and collaborator of Rawa and I am running this campaign. I live in Providence, Rhode Island, and I will send newly raised funds to Rawa every week (GoFundMe doesn't support Perú yet). Rawa's big heart and energy have often put him in the frontline of community efforts to face challenging times.
In Christmas 2019 Rawa raised funds to make sure the kids in his community had a good time together.

La Comunidad Shipibo-Conibo de San Francisco, cerca de Pucallpa (Ucayali) en la amazonía peruana está sufriendo la terrible amenaza doble de la pandemia del Covid-19 más la preexistente epidemia del Dengue. Ambas enfermedades virales presentan síntomas similares, y generan gran confusión entre comuneros indígenas, quienes se encuentran desesperados por acceder a fondos para comprar alimentos básicos. Durante la cuarentena nacional en Perú, los precios de los alimentos se han disparado en los mercados, y el dinero escasea, especialmente para la comunidad Shipibo que depende altamente del turismo y la venta de artesanías.
Rawa Muñoz, comunero artista y Onaya, está lanzando esta campaña internacional en alianza con amistades artistas para recaudar fondos de emergencia. En la amazonía peruana las cosas normalmente son costosas. Durante esta emergencia doble, la carencia y los altos precios amenazan vidas indígenas en un tercer frente, el del hambre. El dinero de esta campaña será utilizado para adquirir alimentos y transportatlos desde Pucallpa hacia la comunidad Shipibo de San Francisco.
Yo soy Nicolás Kisic Aguirre, soy amigo y colaborador de Rawa, y estoy manejando esta campaña. Vivo en Providence, Rhode Island (USA), y enviaré el dinero recaudado a Rawa cada semana (GoFundMe no opera aún en Perú). El gran corazón de Rawa y su energía lo han puesto en ocasiones al frente de su comunidad en momentos difíciles.
