Dear Friends, Family, and Supporters,
The Columbus St. George Ethiopian Sports Club is a non-profit organization based right here in Columbus, Ohio. Our mission is to use the sport of soccer as a platform to promote wellness and unity within the Ethiopian community. The team is made up mostly of immigrant youth and young adults, and through soccer, we encourage healthy lifestyles, community pride, responsible behavior, and cultural exchange. As both a sports and cultural group, we proudly represent the nearly 30,000 Ethiopians who call Central Ohio home.
This organization is especially close to my heart. I personally played for the St. George Soccer Club as a youngster, and I can honestly say I don’t know where I’d be without it. I loved my teammates back then—and to this day, many of us remain a close-knit group. What makes it even more special is that my oldest son has now joined the club as a player over the past couple of years. Seeing the next generation benefit from this same positive experience is something I’m truly grateful for.
Every year, we compete on behalf of the Columbus Ethiopian community at the Ethiopian Soccer Federation in North America (ESFNA) Festival, held in July. This incredible event brings together thousands of people to enjoy concerts, health fairs, and men’s, women’s, and children’s soccer games. This year, the ESFNA Festival will take place in Seattle, Washington, with over 50,000 attendees expected.
While we do collect funds through membership fees and annual fundraisers, these sources simply aren’t enough to cover all the expenses. Our ability to participate in this year’s tournament and festival heavily depends on the generosity of our supporters and sponsors.
I’ve been selected by our Team President Filmon Teklu and Coach KB to help raise funds that will go toward travel, accommodations, and training for our players. My personal fundraising goal is $3,500—and with your help, I know I can reach it. Your contribution, in any amount, will go a long way in supporting not only our team but also our greater mission of building and uplifting our community.
Our campaign is called “Shine in Seattle!”—and it’s more than just about chasing a championship. It’s a movement that calls on us to come together, strengthen our connections, and celebrate the beauty of our heritage.
On behalf of the Columbus St. George Soccer Team, I sincerely thank you for any support you can offer.
Let’s go shine in Seattle!
With gratitude,
Desalen Golla
