Situation
One in five women struggle with their mental health in pregnancy and the first year of their child’s life. Suicide is a leading cause of death in women during pregnancy and in the year after giving birth. Mental illness can not only be devastating for the mother and research shows maternal ill health can also affect the social and emotional wellbeing of the baby during a critical period of their development.

“Shine is the best support I could have ever hoped for. Not only has it given me the opportunity to enjoy a number of crafts for 2 hours a week whilst my baby is cared for, but it has provided me with a group of friends that understand postnatal depression and are there for one another”
- A Shine mum

“Shine has been an absolute lifeline for me over the past year. It’s the most welcoming and nurturing group. When I was at my worst, I felt so supported. The women in the group and hearing their stories gave me the confidence to seek help from my GP. I don’t know where I’d be if I hadn’t done that.”
