My name is Giovan, and my wife Lindsay and I need your help in fundraising for my family in southern Italy, who are experiencing unimaginable tragedy. On July 8, my 13-year-old cousin Sophia was in a horrific motorcycle accident near my father’s hometown of Vitulazio in the province of Caserta. Our goal is to raise funds that will directly fund Sophia's current and ongoing medical expenses. The path forward remains uncertain but the most immediate milestone is to get Sophia breathing on her own and to a point of stability so she can be transferred to a specialized hospital. Soon after the accident, the doctors performed a decompressive craniectomy, where a portion of Sophia’s skull was removed to allow for her brain to swell without limitation of the skull. At this time, doctors are unsure of the long-term impact of her injuries, but we have reason to hope, as last week she was responsive when her mother Nikki called her name, and they were able to lock their eyes for a couple of minutes.

While the family remains faithful and unwavering in their support for Sophia’s recovery, the journey ahead is long and uncertain, with a financial burden that is hard to quantify at this point. Sophia’s loving parents (Bart and Nikki) are both full-time teachers and during this time of recovery, which could take months or longer, they will be by her side every step of the way, unable to return to work. Once Sophia is again able to breathe on her own, they plan to transport her to a medical center specializing in traumatic brain injury, likely in northern Italy, which will bring a massive cost as the family may need to relocate to optimize Sophia’s care.

Sophia is a fun-loving and generous big sister. A role model to her friends at school, she is fascinated by learning and enjoys dance and theatre. Along with her family, she was very excited to visit and explore America this summer, and we need your help and support so that someday when Sophia is healed, that trip will come true.
