Tina and Jason Shinabery stood looking out their front window and made the call no person ever wants to make. The rain was still pouring down outside their Louisiana home, the water was inching up the driveway and they knew the water would soon be so high that the two children (age 5 and 7) they were fostering would have to swim to make it out to a neighbor's house. They did what most of us can't even imagine. They made hard choices about what to take and what to leave. The put important photos and documents in zip-lock bags and stashed them on top of their upper kitchen cabinets.
They stacked furniture as high as they could. And they packed as many essentials as they could carry in their arms. Then they loaded up their two kids, and their basset hound Beau, and walked away from everything - all their belongings, their cars, their memories. That was August 13.
Four days later, they are finally back in their house but the wreckage is tremndous - water in the walls means new drywall, baseboards, flooring, etc will be needed. The contractor suspects it will be 3 to 4 months before they can live there again. They have no flood insurance although they have requested federal assistance.
I'm Jessica Beck, and my husband and I have been friends of Tina and Jason's for over 7 years. We met them when they were living in Washington State working at the Hanford Site. There is no couple who is quicker to lend a helping hand, offer a word of encouragement or donate their time or money to a friend in need than the Shinaberys. But, these are the friends who need our help now. The money raised through this campaign will go to meet immediate needs such as storing what belongings survived the flood during constuction, food and housing costs in the time before they can move back in and replacing essentials that were lost not only for them but for their foster children and to replace income lost during this time and the forseeable future. Tina has been made a direct beneficiary of this fund and will be able to access the money as needed.
Please prayerfully consider if you are able to help take the burden off this highly deserving couple.
