Shield New York - Free PPE for Healthcare Workers
Makers working to make a difference.
Hi. I'm Matthew, a high school student from New York. Along with a group of friends who had always shared my passion for science and technology, we wanted to find a way that we could use our skills to aid our community. We began to manufacture face shields for local healthcare workers with our personal 3D printers when the Coronavirus pandemic became a major issue for our state.
How it's done.
After two weeks of tireless production, We began to transition away from 3D printing, and onto dump molding with polyurethane, which uses a mold which gets filled by a resin that quickly solidifies. This greatly increased our production rate. We were able to go from making 10 shields a day, to over 20 shields per hour (easily 120 shields per day!!).
However, with the increased production rate came a rise in cost. Every shield we make costs about $2, which includes the molded frame, clear visor, and elastic band. That is why I am asking for donations to assist us financially in continuing our efforts to support our local healthcare workers in every way possible.
Who have we helped?
We have already donated nearly 50 shields to many organizations and hospitals and various ICUs in the New York-Long Island area. To see how we have already made a difference, please visit my Instagram page here, where I post updates on our donations, and production!
OUR GOAL
Our goal is to reach 1,000 shields that we have donated to healthcare workers who are in need, and to help in every way that we can. We aim to make a difference in the historically defining time that we live in, and as New Yorkers, we know the impact that this virus has already made in our own community.
We have a great team of dedicated people who are working everyday to fight back against a common enemy. We need your help to allow us to keep going. Thank you for your support of our cause. Stay safe, and stay healthy!
