Sydney Strong

Sydney Pavlik was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) on May 13, 2019. This is a very severe case of leukemia which progresses rapidly and calls for the most aggressive chemo treatment in the hospital, as well as a bone marrow transplant. Sydney’s world, which was previously filled with competitive dance and hanging out with her friends has been turned upside down.

On top of this tragic news, Sydney’s family does not currently have insurance. Many of you know the extreme costs associated with hospitals, chemotherapy, family travels, and so much more.

The most recent update (December 2019)  from Sydney's mom, Brandy is below:

Sydney had a rough month after transplant in the hospital, it was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to see her go through. She had to be out on a pain pump and feeding tube and oxygen. On October 28th she was released from hospital and rang the bell cancer free!!!  We are now on a new recovery path from transplant. Her immune system is suppressed because of the meds she has to take to help with GVHD(graft vs. host disease). Transplant patients can develop this in their heart, lungs, kidney, liver and skin. The doctors thought she had developed lung GVHD in the hospital but luckily it was the mucuscitis and she was able to recover and her lungs are okay she had a little skin GVHD but the doctors have been able to control it and she is doing good. Sydney will continue to go to clinic weekly and right now she is not allowed anywhere but home and clinic (house arrest is what she calls it) but she said at least she’s home and not in the hospital so she has been strong and happy❤️ her 100 day from transplant is January 5th! This is a big day because her meds can start to be lowered if her counts are good! She has a long road ahead of her and will take awhile to be able to do the things she loves! Like Dance! Doctors are very happy with her numbers and are managing any GVHD issues. The next 6 months will be up and down but she will fight through and everyday she gets stronger!❤️

The Comal ISD has been amazing during Sydneys diagnosis! They have a program called homebound, where a teacher goes to her school (SVMS) every  week and gets her assignments from all her teachers and comes to our home twice a week for 2 hours and works with Sydney.  After getting home from hospital she was able to complete all her assignments and is caught back up now and is finishing her first semester of 6th grade next week with finals! I’m so proud of her and how hard she works with everything else she has to deal with and it helps her focus on something other then her illness! She has an A/B average! She hopes to be back at SVMS for 7th grade with her friends next year and if she’s strong enough and ready she plans on trying out for the dance team❤️

Please continue to keep Sydney and the rest of her family in your thoughts and prayers during this time. If you can, we are asking for donations to assist in helping with medical bills and personal bills for the family. Thank you very much for your support!
