Sherman is our Malibu animal rescue angel. She has devoted her life to Malibu and our animals. She has rescued horses, donkeys, chickens, hens, pigs, cows, squirrels, of course hundreds of dogs and cats and even a BLIND RAT during the November 2018 Woolsey fire. Her dedication knows no bounds. It was during that fire that she lost most of her search and rescue ‘gear’.
Sherman recently was an integral part of a team that searched for and successfully rescued an 11 year old hearing impaired dog that was visiting Malibu for the 2020 Labor Day week-end. Charlie had been missing for 60 hours when she was rescued at 4:00 AM. You might have heard about her. Sherman did not personally even know Charlie or her owner Tom, but there she was out searching and gathering others to assist in the search and rescue.
When I was assisting Sherman in locating Charlie, I noticed that Sherman was seriously lacking the gear necessary to search for and rescue animals. Basically she is doing these rescues blind with her hands tied behind her back. This could be your dog, my cat, or your neighbor’s hen. We decided it was necessary to provide Sherman with tools so she can be better prepared to do her next rescue mission. I wanted to set up this page last week right after Charlie was found but she and her rescue team were off to search for and rescue animals in the current fires.
The biggest ticket item Sherman needs is a thermal imaging drone which we have priced at about $4,000. Many rescues take place at night so this is a critical need. She also needs thermal imaging binoculars, walkie talkies, ropes, bolt cutters, gloves, emergency medical equipment and even emergency food supplies and water. During the mission to rescue Charlie, I asked what I could bring and Sherman said ‘please bring a granola bar and some water’. She was out searching while starving and thirsty,. Can you imagine?
Sherman was not enthusiastic about our idea to raise funds for her rescues. We had to encourage her to accept the gratitude and donations our wonderful Malibu community wants to offer her. We finally convinced her to accept our offering. Please give what you can, no amount is too small.
