Sherlock's Cancer Treatment
Donation protected
Hi. I'm Robyn. If you've found this fundraiser it's because we are doing this as a last resort for our baby boy, Sherlock. I've also finally stopped crying enough to write this out. He's 13 years old and anyone that has met him will confirm he is the nicest, most loving boy ever. He was the first cat I got as an adult and he still has a lot of cat left in him. He isn't ready to go and I am not ready to let him go.
Months ago when Sherlock was in for an unrelated issue, the vet discovered an odd lump on his left hind leg. They sent it off for testing, not a biopsy, and it came back suspicious. It was biopsied recently and was found to be a solitary (localized) version of multiple myeloma: extramedullary plasmacytoma. Multiple myeloma is typically extremely aggressive and attacks organs, Sherlock has a localized tumor with no spread. Knock on wood, but he has really lucked out on what it could've ended up as. Extramedullary plasmacytoma is treated with amputation and sees lots of cats live out the rest of their normal lifespan.
We currently reside in Canada and no charity organizations will work with us due to being on visas and not permanent residents. They also are not seeing the donations they used to. We also have tried to qualify for any of the pet healthcare loans and even regular loans and have been denied those, as well. We are struggling ourselves with bills but rest assured all of this would go to Sherlock. The initial goal was 1300 CAD for his biopsy, I raised it to 4000 CAD to include the amputation. I thought that was going to be the maximum needed, however, I received the estimate from the oncologist and the low estimate is nearly 5000 CAD, while the high end is 6335 CAD. I adjusted the goal to 6335 CAD for now.
I am constantly providing proof of his treatment and the estimates in the fundraiser's updates. If you would like the actual full documents since GFM only allows certain aspects ratios and forces you to crop images, I would be happy to provide those, too. I do not want anyone to feel bamboozled or scammed.
Sherlock also still has a great quality of life. You wouldn't even think he is a senior cat. He's active, he's eating, he has had no personality change. This is why I am asking for donations. I would not be asking if he was not able to fight this. If he wasn't in good shape, I would not be asking for anything. We would let him pass kindly with euthanasia. But he's still that same happy, healthy, silly boy that was given to me back in 2012. Please give him a chance. The only thing standing in his way of beating this is money, not his own health. Not the oncologist giving him mere months. Money. This isn't me or Joe being selfish and holding onto him longer than he should be held. I've seen firsthand that happen and I would be more than ready to make the call for euthanasia, but he is not there. He is healthy. He is still Sherlock. Every vet that has seen him has said his quality of life is there and I agree. I would not let him go through treatment if I didn't think he had quality of life.
