Sherese’s Run for Friends of Custer Fire

Envision a goal. See it through. This is the message that I was taught at a very young age. It has stuck with me throughout the course of my life. When I started running long distance, something struck me. Running empowered me. In this strength, I could accomplish so much more, personally and professionally. Most runners probably understand this message, because it provides a unique way to connect with oneself. It challenges you, builds character, and ultimately pushes you to your limit. But when you accomplish that goal…there simply is no better feeling. That is why this year, I am running the Chicago Marathon on behalf of Friends of Custer Fire, a 501(C)3 non-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting the local heroes of my community. The values of this organization to “envision, encourage and empower” people support my goal and dedication to running one of largest, most well-known marathons in the US and abroad. This cause is very important to me because I see a need and am determined to help fulfill that need. Friends of Custer Fire “envisions community involvement to encourage financial support and empower our local heroes to help save lives” as their mission. The community our firefighters and first responders serve is a small, rural, underserved community. My community needs an ambulance to respond in a timely manner to EMS calls. After our first responders arrive on scene to provide care to a patient, they must wait for an ambulance to arrive on scene from a surrounding community to transport the patient to the hospital. This may take 20 minutes or more and can affect patient outcomes. My mission is to raise money on behalf of Friends of Custer Fire through running to help raise funds to purchase an ambulance for the local heroes and first responders of my community.
