Sheppard Public School is enhancing and greening the playground and we need your help!
Our Playground Enhancement Project is going strong! In Fall 2018 we Depaved a portion of the tarmac, as shown in the video above.
Following our Depave event, Parent Council worked with community partners and the School Board to install the following new features in the space:
· large native shade trees
· bioswale to help soak up rain water
· 3 tiered mud table
· chalk board
· log obstacle course
· two large infiltration galleries to help drain rain and snow melt from the field and teachers parking lot
Work will commence this year on our next phase - including two additional rain gardens to help soak up runoff from the tarmac, and more play equipment!
Full Project History:
In May 2018 a landscape designer (parent volunteer) consulted with teachers, staff, and students at Sheppard School to reimagine the outdoor areas at Sheppard! Together they evaluated existing problems and possible solutions via written questionnaires and 6 one-hour design workshops with grade 5 and 6 students. These exercises ultimately informed the ‘Sheppard Playground Expansion’ design. Work began right away and in summer 2019 construction of Phase 2 was completed.
We are now looking for your help in reaching our final goal. Your donations will soon become rain gardens, playground equipment, and more! Please note as of September 2019 we are only able to accept donations via WEFI and directly at Sheppard PS.
