Shelties at the Vet School

5/3 UPDATE:

Miracles do happen ( with the help of medicine and prayers!). Nuri is almost back to normal in every way possible! Her anemia is no longer present, her elevated WBC (infection/ tissue inflammation/ cell death) value has gone completely back to normal, her albumin level is back in the normal level ( was in the dangerous low level where edema was about to happen), her kidney values are back to normal, and her liver values are probably within a week of being normal!!! Of course, we won’t know how much permanent damage has been done, but hopefully there is enough normal liver left to give her a long, healthy life!
Nuri has the green light to go back to light duty training to start building up her endurance and strength (and to tire her bright mind). Jenna has the freedom to sleep all night now instead of waking up every few hours to give a boatload of medications that all had to be separated for best results. Cherie (and Jenna) can get back to work making their awesome dog toys!!
Thanks again for all of your support!!!

4/20   UPDATE:

Nuri Ali has now faced death twice and come back ( maybe she is part cat). She became very anemic ( HCT of 12!!) after being on the potent  heavy metal chelating drugs from the vet school. So with a change in medications and a transfusion at the ER on Fri night, I am happy to report that as of yesterday, her HCT is up to 28…. Woohoo! Her liver enzymes and electrolytes are all over the place ( some super high, some super low) so we are trying to work through that. Her kidneys are just starting to show some signs of distress too, so we are watching that closely. But here is the thing…… Nuri does not want to die, she is fighting to live with every ounce of her being! She is now begging to do some “work” to earn her food!! She is trotting around like nothing happened (she lacks energy so she can’t do it for long periods of time, but she does as much as she can).  She continues to get acupuncture and laser treatments in addition to her slew of medications. Jenna has been amazing in keeping track of all of them ( most have to be separated out by 2 hours and given multiple times a day)….. she has Nuri’s schedule in her phone and it sounds the alarm every 2 hours….. Jenna has not gotten much sleep the past 3 weeks, but Nuri wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for her dedication ( and some help from Cherie, of course).  We will recheck bloodwork every week until things have normalized.
So once again, I want to THANK YOU all for your support ( monetary and well thoughts/ prayers)……. Without that, Nuri wouldn’t be doing so well.

4/14  UPDATE:

Hatter’s bloodwork is back to normal now, but we will continue to monitor in the future.

Nuri is gravely ill. I do fear that she will not pull through without a miracle sent her way ( if you have any to spare, please send!). We are changing up some of her meds (some were not agreeing with her stomach) and added in low level light therapy (laser) and acupuncture as a last ditch effort to try to get her to rally. Please keep her and her family in your thoughts and prayers!!

I want to thank everyone so much for all of your generous donations…… I am overwhelmed by the response! Cherie and Jenna are so blessed to have such wonderful friends , family, and strangers willing to help! THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

Hi Everyone! I have started a new fundraiser for my friends, Cherie and Jenna O’Connor ( dog toy makers for Tugawaycuwin). They were at the AKC National Agility trial in Ocala, Fl last week vending and ended up having some very hard luck. As they were packing up their store, they put their 5 yr old Shelties, Hatter and Nuri, in the van. Unbeknownst to them, the dogs got into the container that had Ligaplex supplements and ate the entire bottle ( along with a few days worth of dehydrated food). They discovered the theft quickly and induced vomiting, but unfortunately not fast enough to stop severe illness. Both dogs were hospitalized at a local ER but then had to be transferred to the University of Florida Veterinary School for continued care ( and Cherie and Jenna had to camp out in their van in parking lots). The dogs both ended up having manganese toxicity from the supplements. Hatter must have eaten less because she did not get as sick as Nuri and is recovering well so far. Nuri, on the other hand, is very ill even after a week in the ER getting experimental treatments. Her liver is in failure and there is a good possibility that she might not make it. The veterinarians told Cherie and Jenna today that they should just take her home because there was nothing more they can do. So they are on their way back home tonight after a very long, stressful, sad week!
These ladies are wonderful people and would never ask for money, but they racked up over $10,000 in one week between the 2 dogs ( and they were trying to make money while in FL, not spend it). So if you have any spare $, I am sure they would be very appreciative. And if you don’t have any extra $, please send prayers, hugs, good luck, anything you have to Nuri ( as well as Hatter, Cherie, and Jenna) as they navigate through the next few weeks ( follow up testing, etc)
Please share with the agility and Sheltie community also.
Thank you so much!
