Richard Mellon is a homeless resident of Woodstock NY fot 5 years now.
Over a decade ago he lost everything to medical bankruptcy and moved to the town in due course.
Richard is disabled with an inoperable hiatal hernia and heart arrhythmia and can barely walk. Add to that blood clots and a pulmonary embolism he surfed through, outside living is hazardous for him.
Years ago he was an avid deep-country hiker traveling across the nation telling his stories of his own si-fi alter ego, Elvis Mellon, and living in a Colorado mountain silver mine.
He is deeply fluent in the subjects of world religion, ancient history, philosophy, Egyptology, ancient Rome, rock music history, many esoteric teachings, Buddhism, and numerous other subjects.
Today, his disability check can get him a week in a motel, plus food, supplies, and camping equipment. Richard is an expert camper, but his medical issues make it extremely dangerous to be subject to such conditions.
We see that he has regularly been overlooked by RUPCO, the local affordable housing organization although he has had an application filed with them for years.
DSS has him tied up with a misunderstanding so he cannot access their services. His food stamps are under $40 a month.
The goal of this fundraiser is to provide him with motel payments until the weather at night rises above 50 degrees.
One day at a time, if need be.
