Shelly's Fight Against Leukemia

Donation protected
Hello,

My name is Brittany. My mom’s name is Shelly as most of you know already. Shelly is 48 years old. She has two children, myself Brittany (age  24) and Breanna (age 26). She also has a five year old grandaughter that she adores named Jazzy. My mom is a very active person who enjoys swimming more than anything, running, and biking. In fact, two years ago she finished her very first triathlon!  We are so proud of her for that! Over the last few years she has continued to be a physically active mom of two grown children. She would do anything for either of us to have anything we could ever imagine. She pushed us even in our adult years to accomplish our dreams and goals, setting no limitations. Over the last month we started to notice that she wasn’t being her normal ambitious self. She started to exercise less and less, she didn’t want to be around her family, and she was tired all the time. She then went in for a routine physical. Her blood work showed that she had virtually no white blood cells and very little red blood cells. The doctors at the office were amazed that she was even still able to walk/ talk/ and drive! They said her red blood cells were so low that it was the equivalent to being in a bad car accident and loosing half of her blood. Her body, although tired, compensated and continued to work normally although she was tired. At this point, the clinic then sent her out to a facility by ambulance. They said it was too unsafe to drive or to have someone drive her. It was then in Janesville WI that they took a bone marrow biopsy. The results showed that my mom has leukemia. Although this facility was able to diagnose leukemia, they were unable to treat it. We then sent my mom to Milwaukee WI to reconfirm the diagnoses. They then again took a bone marrow biopsy and concluded it was leukemia. We thought there was no way!!! How could this even be possible!  What causes it? They wanted to begin chemotherapy right then and there. We knew very little about leukemia. They told us that they don’t even know what causes leukemia and that treatment would make her extremely sick and prone to sickness. This was devastating for her and her kids to hear! We then, as a family, made the decision that we wanted something more and had her transferred to The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, five hours away. This is a world renowned facility for treating cancer; they are the BEST! This was something that she wanted and we wanted her to have it!  They once again took a painful bone marrow biopsy, tested it and confirmed it was leukemia. On 11/7/15 at 8pm they started chemotherapy. They are hopeful that the chemo will work but nothing is certain when it comes to cancer. They told her she would not be able to work for 6 months minimal. That six months is assuming that nothing will go wrong and that the treatment will work the first time. Its ripping her heart out that she can’t be home with us and that she is away from Jazzy. That’s why we need your help! She needs all the love and support she can get!!! She is away from her family, friends, and home. Although we will do our best to see her, we need your help! We want her to continue to get the care she needs to get better up at Mayo! PLEASE HELP US support our mom in her journey! We will be forever grateful to those of you who help us save her life!
