We were sitting quietly in church that day in late September 2003. We were just minding our own business in the Vineyard Church of North Dallas knowing that the next day was the 3rd anniversary of our son, Matthew, being promoted to Heaven. We had made peace with it and he was now in our future and as the scripture says “we grieved with hope”.
Shelly was my hearer and seer with the Lord in fact I relied on her most of the time to make sure we were doing what God was saying but today that would not be the case. Our pastor was speaking about his vision for the church and how Mexico was in the middle of that vision. All of the sudden he said we will send a family from this church to Mexico this coming year. In that moment both Shelly and I heard the Lord say “you are going to Mexico”. I was always joking about us going on the mission field but I would always insert Africa or China as our destination.
I looked at Shelly and said “we are going to Mexico” and she replied “yes we are” and this was how our 15 years in Mexico started. It wasn’t like God had not prepared us for this journey. I had been raised from the dead in 1998 from an electrical accident and He walked us through a year of healing and therapy. Then as I had mentioned about our 20 year old son going to be with the Lord in 2000 but he had done much more than that with and for us. We both were survivors of a lot of abuse, rejection, and abandonment in our childhoods and He was faithful to heal us and promote us in His body.
As we were preparing to move to Mexico the Lord was speaking to us a lot. He said “I want you to forgive them in advance”.I said “for what” and He said “for all the betrayals that will happen there”. Wow!, that had to be brought back to me several times over the years reminding me I had already forgiven them.
Our duties in Mexico were to run a Seminary and build relationships. Shelly was awesome at this and not only learned the language very quickly but grew the relationships very deeply. We were impacting lives with the Gospel of the Kingdom and not only setting people free but healing was flowing as well. We have graduated over 100 people from the seminary and outside of our church, The Bridge, we have 3 other churches under us. We knew change was coming and we were not sure how much longer we would be in Mexico and many of our leaders were ready to be unleashed to listen and do things on their own.
June at our 14 anniversary and the beginning of our 15th year people close to us began to hear a difference in Shelly’s voice. Her sister asked her if she had been drinking and so did our daughter. We began to pay closer attention and we could see there was something going on. We contacted our doctors who are dear friends and we began a series of test like MRI and blood work but there was no evidence of anything. Finally talking to a neurologist she put together that Shelly’s right side was being affected. Her tongue’s right side and her right arm were weak and not responding so she wanted an Electromyography (EMG) which is for very specific symptoms of ALS. She tested positive on all 4 categories. It is in an early stage but is a rapid growing form of ALS.
Now let’s get somethings straight. We believe in spiritual warfare and we believe that we can be attacked by an enemy to bring on sickness. We also believe in healing and freedom through prayer. We believe that healing is holistic and so you have to do spiritual things and physical things to heal. Saying that we have been seeing every Christian healer we are close to and we have intercessors praying daily. We also are seeking medical healing from our dear friend Russ Houck. He is the only person offering a solution to our problem. Medical science has no solution or help for us so we must go alternative.
We are in the process of leaving Mexico. We have appointed our 3 top leaders over the ministry and put the top 9 leaders under them. 12 is a good number to start a ministry. Lol. We are coming back and entering an intense cleansing program with Dr. Houck Feb. 3. This will take between 3 and 6 months and we will need to raise money just for this purpose. We believe God confirmed this action and we are going to be obedient.
After giving our lives to Mexico for the Lord this is not exactly where we expected to be. Without jobs without retirement benefits and looking down the barrel of a terminal disease…... “but God”. I mean all great stories in the bible changed at the point it says “but God” then it all changes. This is just a new adventure not one larger than what we have seen before. “But God” is faithful and as before He will not leave us and He is not scared of a giant called ALS. We will talk with Him trusting Him and permitting the knowledge He has given Dr. Russ Houck to aid us in the battle. Please consider helping not only us but so many others with ALS that do not have a solution.
