What was considered a normal and fun Sunday with her family, would later end, with an evening trip to the hospital, and learning that she had blood cancer (Acute Myeloid Leukemia). Shelia Cooper has always been a giver, and has a tremendous dedication to her community. Shelia’s life has been a testimony to strength, perseverance, and compassion to others. Shelia Cooper retired after 36 years of service from Heart of America United Way. Her retirement years haven’t consisted of relaxing trips to the beach, but a dedicated commitment to the youth of Kansas City. Shelia became an active partner in her daughter’s nonprofit, Healing Pathway Victim Service Agency, which is dedicated to supporting children of homicide victims. Each year she has ensured that children who have lost a parent to homicide, are able to have Christmas.
Shelia Cooper has been a dedicated mother to her only daughter Monica, and a wonderful grandmother to her only grandchild Morgan. She is fun, witty, and full of energy, which is the same spirit that she has taken on the journey to fight leukemia. Determined to fight this very dangerous and aggressive form of blood cancer, Shelia and her daughter Monica made a decision to transfer her to the University of Kansas Hospital, where she would undergo a very aggressive form of chemotherapcy known as 7+3.
Shelia survived the chemo treatment, then contracted an infection, as result of her very compromised immune system. The nearly fatal infection has placed her in a very critical position, but with the love and support of friends, family, strangers, and an amazing medical team, she is still here fighting. As expected associated costs are adding up, and Shelia still has to pay for her supplemental health insurance each month. As friends of this family, we are wanting to alleviate some of the pressure, show them that we care, and that this time it is ok to not be the giver, but the receiver during their time of need. Any amount that you can donate would be greatly appreciated, and used for medical associated costs, Ms. Cooper’s bills, and transportation related costs for medical visits. We thank you in advance.

Please keep praying for Shelia Cooper and the family.
