Sheela Standley's Medical Treatment

With severe Ulcerative Colitis, a massage therapy practice to keep from falling apart and a family to care for, this mother of two needs your support.

Sheela Piazza-Standley is a loving mother of two boys, Jacob (19 years old) and Michael (16 years old). She recently got married to Scott Piazza after being together for 10 years. Unfortunately, Scott lost his job in 2015 due to a buyout of his company, so it was a tough year financially. His current job is about an hour away from home, so he is gone for 11 hours a day, making it difficult for him to get a second job during this time.

Sheela has been a massage therapist for the last 11 years and truly loves her job. She began to run her own practice out of her home in order to work through the start of her health issues and also care for her two teen boys. Her clients have been extremely patient and supportive while she takes this time to heal. Although she has been trying to keep working, the medications she has to take for the Ulcerative Colitis causes fevers and flu-like symptoms making things extremely difficult.

Jacob and Michael:
Jacob Standley is now 19 yrs old. He joined the Job Corp in the fall of 2016 to study forestry and fire science in Oregon. He has officially completed his certificate and was chosen for a position as a Field Marine Biology Tech for the summer in Steamboat Springs, Co. He ultimately wants to earn a law enforcement degree to be a Park Ranger in a National Park.

Michael Standley is the youngest, a 16 year old junior in high school. He will be going into his second year with the Skill Center studying Comstruction and hopes to go on to a Trade School after graduation.

Sheela's Diagnosis:
"In November of 2016, I started in a flare up, but had no idea what it was at the time. We had no health insurance at the time due to the wait period we had to have with Scott's new job and so I put off going in to the doctor. In early March things had gotten really bad, so as soon as I was on the new health care insurance, I called my doctor to get in as soon as I could. I could feel the toll it was taking on my body. They told me the soonest they could see me was May 15.

Morning of March 30th my body began shutting down as I went into Hypovolemic Shock and had severe anemia from the blood loss which ended up requiring a transfusion. I ended up in the ER that day and was sent to ICU for the next 2 days where they did my emergency colonoscopy and endoscopy and began to stabilize me. I ended up staying a total of 6 days in the hospital before I begged them to go home and they finally released me to go home and rest and recover.

A week and half later doctor visit--The biopsies came back with a definitive diagnosis of Ulcerative Colitis and as the Doctor stated, it is 'extensive and severe'. It could take up to a year for full healing.

I am currently undergoing treatment with the hopes it will get it into remission so I can resume normal life.

The treatment is a lot of immunosuppressive therapy along with strong anti-inflammatory meds, all which come with heavy side effects. The recovery from the blood loss alone has been difficult, but I was not prepared for the extreme physical exhaustion that has come from the colon itself having to heal and still try to manage life."

The scares of Sheela's health problems has put her boys through a lot of anxiety, especially her younger son, Michael. He has already been struggling with health problems of his own, which has accumulated large medical bills.

Financial support at this time will help keep Sheela and her family on their feet and also keep Sheela's business from falling apart while she does her best to heal. Thank you for your support and prayers.
