My mother, Jacqueline Chaplain, is a 65-year-old woman whose warmth and kindness have touched everyone she meets. She is a devoted Christian who has built lasting friendships everywhere she goes, always offering love, encouragement, and a listening ear to others. She is my only parent—my entire world—and watching her break down in tears every day as her health declines is something I can hardly bear. It’s deeply painful and has taken a toll on me emotionally, but I am doing everything I can to stay strong for her as she faces this incredibly difficult time.
My mother has already lost so much, and now she is on the verge of losing everything.
Years ago, she lost her right eye in a workplace accident—something she learned to live with through strength and courage. But now, the only vision she has left is fading. A severe cataract has developed in her left eye, and without urgent surgery, she will go completely blind. This is not just a medical procedure—it is her last chance to see, to recognize the faces she loves, and to hold on to her independence. The cost of this surgery is 670,000 JMD (about $4,300 USD), which is far beyond what we can afford on our own.
As if that wasn’t enough, she suffered a stroke in February of last year. Since December, her condition has been getting worse at a frightening pace. The woman who once spoke so clearly now struggles to find her words. Her memory is slipping, and now even her movements are becoming harder—her hand-eye coordination is no longer what it used to be. We are watching her slowly decline, and it is heartbreaking. She urgently needs an MRI of her brain so doctors can understand what is happening and try to help her. The cost of 170,000 JMD is roughly about $1,080 USD.
We are doing everything we can, but we cannot do this alone. The thought of her losing her last eye—and with it, her ability to see the world, her family, and even herself—is something we are desperately trying to prevent.
We are asking, from the bottom of our hearts, for your help. Any donation, no matter how small, brings us closer to saving her vision and getting her the care she desperately needs. If you cannot give, please share her story. Your kindness could be the reason she doesn’t lose her sight—and with it, her world.
