Shay's Journey to Sight: Your Help is Needed

Donation protected
My name is Jackalyn and I am setting up this fundraiser for my Husband, Shay. He needs medically necessary contact lenses, not covered by insurance.

In 2020, my husband was diagnosed with Keratoconus; A condition in which the clear tissue on the front of the eye (cornea) bulges outward. With keratoconus, the clear, dome-shaped tissue that covers the eye (cornea) thins and bulges outward into a cone shape. Its cause is unknown.

Shay has tried glasses to help correct his vision and they did not help. The next step is corrective contact lenses which come in a 5-year supply as they are specially made to fit his eyes. The issue is state insurance will not pay for these lenses although it's medically necessary. If we don't slow his progression, Shay will need two cornea transplants in the future. My husband's current vision issues have been a burden on him, not being able to drive and obtain certain jobs. These contact lenses will allow Shay to get his driver’s license which would be a tremendous help to our family.

In 2021, I was diagnosed with Intracranial hypertension (too much CSF around my brain) which comes with severe symptoms such as balance issues, dizziness, blurred vision, light sensitivity, and so much more. My symptoms are preventing me from driving most days. I also experience syncope and collapse where I randomly pass out. In March of this year I passed out, landed on my head, and ended up with 4 spinal compression fractures affecting my cervical spine. I am advised not to drive by my doctor. I have been the sole licensed driver in my household for years and now my husband needs to assume that role. We are having to rely on those around us for appointments, trips to the grocery store, and events for our kids.

My husband needs these contact lenses more than anyone could imagine. He hasn’t been able to properly see since he was a child. Shay was given the opportunity to try these lenses at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics; he had 20/20 vision with them. He was given 10 minutes of vision and then found out our insurance won’t cover them.

The contact lenses through the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics cost just over $2000 for the cheapest brand. We will need to travel to Iowa City for a few appointments to obtain the lenses, so we are also requesting travel fees. Any donations no matter how big or small, even a share is greatly appreciated!
