My friend, former co-teacher, work wife, Shay, quite literally has the heart of a warrior. Of all the obstacles that 2020 brought with it, breast cancer was the last thing any of us saw coming. With zero family history, this came as a complete shock and was only discovered after a routine mammogram.
After a series of follow up exams, the doctors felt confident that the cancer was caught early enough that a mastectomy and radiation would be sufficient and that the dreaded chemo would be unnecessary. However, that was not the case.
In November, 2020, Shay underwent surgery. Unfortunately, after the mastectomy was performed and the analysis of the lymph nodes came back she was upgraded to stage 3A breast cancer. This news also means that she will indeed undergo chemotherapy treatments for at least 5 months and will be UNABLE to work. The out of pocket expense of the chemo sessions are looking to cost a minimum of $6,500... this does not include co payments, medication, or any other related expense. As many of you know she is also a single mother raising 2 young sons and is lives on a teachers salary.
Shay ALWAYS puts the needs of others first, even while she has been going through the most unimaginable health and family circumstances. She continues to rise and push through the pain, and has also continued to TEACH (through a pandemic) before her chemotherapy treatments begin on January 19, 2021.
Please keep Shay, her two sons, and family/friends in your prayers!
Blessings,
