On February 2, 2020, while on the job site, Shawn Michael VanLuchene had a seizure and collapsed. His coworkers rushed to his side and called an ambulance. He was rushed to Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph, Misouri where he underwent multiple CT scans, MRI’s, a spinal tap and other tests. The testing uncovered a brain tumor. They scheduled him for surgery, where he underwent a needle biopsy of the tumor. The samples were sent to Mayo Clinic for pathology.
On February 6, 2020, he was discharged to come back home to Michigan, where we waited for the results.
On March 2, 2020, we traveled to the University of Michigan Cancer Center. His tumor was diagnosed as an Anaplastic Astrocytoma, grade 3.
We are getting ready for his next appointment, on March 13, 2020, to discuss the course of treatment. It will most likely be a combination of radiation, chemotherapy and surgical removal of the tumor.
By trade, Shawn is an ironworker. He has only been able to work a limited amount of hours, with many restrictions, due to the seizure risk. He has to take daily medication to control the seizures so he is unable to drive.
His family, fiance’ and friends have been at his side, supporting him during this difficult time. We are all praying for the strength Shawn will need to prepare him for the long road ahead.
