On October 23rd of this year, Shawnda LaMarr Wilkinson was hospitalized due to having a Hemoglobin level of 2.3 g/dL and dropping, which is frighteningly low as the average level for women is between 12.0 and 15.5 g/dL. Six days later, she and her family found out the devastating news that she had been diagnosed with cancer in the jejunum (small intestine). After numerous tests and days in the hospital, her worst fear was confirmed when she was told that the cancer may have spread to her lungs. In the matter of two months our strong, fearless, vibrant friend, sister and mother has grown weak as her body is beginning the fight of its life. Despite Shawnda’s reluctance to ask for help, the financial and physical burden her battle with cancer has already produced, compounded with the toll of Covid-19, has left her and her family needing support now more than ever before.
While this journey has only just started, it has been made more difficult by barriers created by her insurance company and the pandemic. For weeks on end, her insurance company denied her PET scan delaying necessary results and her treatment plan. Now, she and her family are fighting for the insurance company to cover a vital medication essential for her survival. The doctors treating Shawnda informed her how urgent it is that she begins treatment immediately if she wants to survive. Shawnda has to focus on getting well at this time and should not have to worry about medical bills in the midst of this nightmare. We are asking for financial support so she can focus on fighting for her life. Her children who now have the task of being her caregivers should not face the burden of medical bills.
For those of you who do not know Shawnda, she has been a resident of the DMV since 1999. Shawnda has the gift of gab and her infectious spirit makes strangers instantaneous friends. Her personality is larger than life and the only thing bigger than her mouth. Those who have been fortunate to see her in action, know that she has the warmest hugs and one of the most giving hearts. She has been “Mama Shawnda” to children beyond those she has birthed and treats kids from all around as her own. Her home is a safe refuge for many and all are always welcome. She is a true embodiment of “my home is your home”. It does not matter who you are, what you have or how you earn your money, every relationship is priceless to Shawnda. She gives back on a consistent basis and like most givers in need, you would never know her situation. The Bible speaks of “to everything is a season,” and this is the time that she needs support from those who have come to love her and strangers who would if they knew her.
Despite the trials and tribulations Shawnda has faced as a single parent of four children, this has by far been the most trying challenge to date. As stated before, Shawnda was very hesitant about asking for assistance. However, as the reality of her illness sets in, she understands that if there ever was a time to lean on her village, it is now.
While this cancer is trying tooth and nail to dim Shawnda’s light, she is not letting up. She continues to be touched by the support, prayers and kind messages she has received. The love being showered upon her, and her love of life and family, is inspiring her to continue to fight.
Anything you are able to give, no matter how small, will be met with an abundance of appreciation. If you are not able to donate, please pray. Thank you in advance for your support.
