Hello family and friends!
I’ve set up this page so we can all get together and show Shawn how loved he is by helping with his medical bills.
Right now he can't sit or move his torso because his lower back (lumbar area) suffered great damage (that's where most of the pain is). Much of his lower back (about 8 inches) needs to be replaced by titanium prosthesis spine. (Am I the only one shocked they can even do that!?).
He will need three surgeries. The first one will take place next week if they (as in mom and dad) can get all the parts for his prosthesis and will be to install the go-go-gadget spine.
The second surgery will be one week after the first. They (as in the doctors [phew!]) will go in through the front to get to the front of his spine and work from that angle. Then one or two weeks later he will start to sit up and move his torso.
The third surgery will be on one of his feet. It will also need a titanium prosthesis brace to hold his ankle together.
He is expected to be in the hospital for 8 weeks, depending on how hard he works, then he goes to rehabilitation to learn to walk again. My mom said, “With the attitude he has now, I think he will amaze everyone with his progress.”
He will be out of work for at least a few months. Since he lives on the third floor and obviously can’t climb stairs, he will go live with mom and dad once released from the hospital.
In most cases a hospital stay and surgery like this would cost more than a house! Thankfully where he is the hospital stay and surgery are free. There are however several expenses that Shawn will need to cover:
Prosthesis for his spine: $17000 (that is the first estimate they are checking elsewhere for a better price)
Prosthesis for his ankle: $2000 - $3000
Food: $50 a week
Rehabilitation to walk again: unknown, but it will probably be live in treatment. Probably a caregiver at some point when he lives alone.
Utilities for his apartment while he is not working (his rent is already paid for about 8 months): $75 a month
Taxi and ambulance transport: probably $100 a month but depends if he is live in.
Grief and PTSD counseling: Unknown
Shawn knowing how much we all love him: Priceless
