I’m reaching out to ask for your help for a dear friend of mine, Shawna. She is facing a serious health crisis, with her doctor suspecting she has myxoid liposarcoma. This type of cancer is generally slow growing and has a favorable prognosis if treated early. However, if left untreated, there is a risk that it could spread. Over the past two weeks, blood tests have revealed concerning markers, and numerous CT scans, ultrasounds, and MRIs have identified 10 masses throughout her body. Two of these masses are so large that they require urgent biopsies to confirm the diagnosis and determine the best treatment plan to save her life. Without these biopsies, her doctors cannot move forward, and without insurance, Shawna is struggling to afford the care, procedures, and medications she desperately needs.

Shawna has also been living with ITP (a blood disorder causing low platelets) and Factor V Leiden (a clotting condition) for the past 15 years. While these conditions are not an immediate concern, they add an extra layer of complexity to her treatment and care.

In just 11 months, Shawna has lost over 130 pounds, with 80 of those pounds lost since January. Her weight continues to drop at an alarming rate. The placement of these tumors are pressing on surrounding areas, causing extreme cramping and discomfort. She’s become too ill to work and can no longer support herself or children.

As a single mom of five, Shawna’s greatest worry isn’t herself—it’s her kids. Even in the midst of this storm, she puts them first, showering them with boundless love, comfort, and strength.

Shawna’s heart is one of the biggest I’ve ever known. She’s the person who checks in on others, shares a kind word when it’s needed most, and finds ways to lift people up no, matter what she’s facing. Everyone who has the blessing of meeting Shawna knows how deeply she loves and how much joy she brings to those around her.

Her resilience and kindness continue to shine, even in the darkest moments. Now it’s our turn to show Shawna the love and support she has always given so freely. It takes a village, and together, we can ease her burden and give her a fighting chance.
