In October 2024, Shawna Watkins was diagnosed with the most common breast cancer, invasive mammary carcinoma, which tested positive for the Her2 protein, making it more aggressive. Thankfully, the cancer was detected early and her doctors staged it at 1b. She is optimistic for a good outcome after all of the treatments.

Shawna has now completed 5 out of 6 of her chemotherapy and antibody treatments. The final chemo treatment will be the week of February 17, 2025. Following that, Shawna will have surgery, a lumpectomy, to remove whatever remains of the cancer and a couple of lymph nodes. Then she will have about a month of radiation therapy, followed by 5-10 years of medication.

Shawna has been able to continue working thus far, just not as many hours as usual. As a Labor and Delivery Nurse, working with families as they welcome a sweet new baby has been a nice distraction. Shawna's surgery has been scheduled for March 25, 2025, and at that point, she will be out on disability.

The medical bills have started to pour in, coupled with her decrease in wages earned, are cause for concern for Shawna and Clint.
