UPDATE- July 14th, words from Shawn.
First off I want to extend many thanks and gratitude to my friends aka family in Yellowknife. Your support has been overwhelming. To my family and friends across North America and beyond .. thank you for your love and support❤️. It has been a humbling experience.
I've never experienced illness such as this. In saying that oddly enough I've yet to experience any anxiety or fear related to my condition or mortality. I've only been able to experience my life one minute or day at a time. I'm living it with lots of love and gratefulness. My spouse Michele has been by my side and is my champion and I owe much to her love and care.
Our dear friends Trevor Dill and Laurie Dobbs have graciously welcomed us into their home throughout this period and we owe them a special debt of thanks. We love you guys!
With regards to current condition and prognosis. I finished the first stage of in-patient chemotherapy at the end of June. I was given an almost two week break between chemo ( each stage is 4-5 weeks long). In that time my bone marrow was being analyzed by pathologist and it was determined I am in remission. This does not mean cancer free but was a good sign to move forward to the next stage of chemotherapy as an outpatient to keep me in remission. This consists of 3 five week sessions of chemotherapy/ recovery.
In the end I hope to be cured. There's a 70-75% chance of this occurring. Followed by 2 years of regular follow-up bloodwork and meds. So pretty good odds. But like I always say, shit happens so for now I'll continue to live for the day.
I still have a road ahead of me but one that has been by paved by the very best of humanity and I'm forever thankful.
ORIGINAL POST - Our dear friend Shawn Roper has been unfortunately diagnosed with AML- acute myeloid leukemia and is currently undergoing extensive chemotherapy, that can only be provided in Edmonton Alberta.
If you are lucky enough to know Shawn, you know that he's the most kind-hearted person you've ever met. He is the first person to offer help to friends and acquaintances in any sort of support they need, without any expectation of compensation of any kind - he's truly just happy to help anyone in need.
Both him and his partner Michele could use some financial support to help them through his battle with Cancer. There will be significant travel costs including flights, accommodations for family, meals, etc. and any support you can offer would be greatly appreciated!
