Shave For Myanmar
We are a group of friends living in the UK; all three of us are career women of 40+ and originally from Myanmar. We are taking up a challenge by shaving our heads in August 2022 on the commemoration of our historic student lead nationwide revolution of 8888 against the oppressive regime of General Nay win. The history wheel is turning again in Myanmar on 1st February 2021, when the Myanmar Military attempted to take over the country from our democratically elected government. They imprisoned our elected president and the state leaders. In 550 days, they have killed over 2000 and arrested over 15000 innocent civilians. For the first time in history since the ending of the second world war, the number of displaced men, women and children in Myanmar has exceeded one million. This includes almost 700,000 people displaced by the conflict and insecurity since the military attempted takeover.
Myanmar is deep in a Humanitarian crisis caused by the Junta’s deliberate action of hostage-taking, killings, rapes and serious bodily injuries, conducted with the intention of provoking terror in the population, constitute terrorism offences under Myanmar’s own law.
In the central region of Myanmar, Sagaing and Magway area, the Junta set fire to the villages 435 times in a year. Some of the villages were savagely attacked several times and burned down to ashes. It really breaks our hearts to hear and see their accounts such as, “In my village, there were 177 houses including mine was burned down by the Junta’s forces and 156 were completely destroyed”. These are just a tip of the iceberg. From 1st to 15th May, 6000 homes in the central regions have been burnt, an estimated total of 9187 homes at 254 locations have been torched.
Hearing all the devasting news from Myanmar has motivated us to set up this fundraising page to support humanitarian assistance for Myanmar IDPs. We will be taking up a sponsorship challenge by shaving our heads completely. All the funds raised will help rebuild the lives of the community in the central region of Myanmar.
We would like to ask for a sponsorship donation, and please show your support and solidarity by contributing generously to this benevolent cause. We are genuinely grateful and sincerely appreciate your moral kindness and financial support.
Yours sincerely
