It is with mixed emotions that I humbly request financial assistance for my good friend’s family in the wake of Shaun Taylor’s untimely death. I recognize that our collective grief will not be relieved by dollar signs, but there is a genuine need for his fragmented family to address some immediate costs for funeral arrangements, legal expenses, mortgage( while awaiting probate) and most importantly, the care of Shaun’s adult son, who needs constant 24/7 care in a specialized facility.
Please allow me to share Shaun’s story.
Shaun was a “Man’s Man!” He loved life and was passionate about his kids (Hailey and Caden), his 1970 Nova he called “SteelRat”( after a British cartoon character from his youth in England), his friends and his lengthy career with Fraser Health authority. His infectious and mischievous smile would disarm anyone and his quick wit and self-deprecating humor won over the strongest willed adversaries immediately. His handshake was his bond and he genuinely loved people of all backgrounds. While doing business with my company, Shaun made a point of getting to know every single person here and called them by name on his continued visits! Although I never witnessed him at Fraser Health (Regional Renal care Supervisor, then Regional Cardiac Supervisor) I can only imagine he operated through all aspects of his career in this manner. His crowning achievement was being named General Manager in the creation of BC Children Hospital’s TECK ACUTE CARE CENTRE. He referred to this as “The Olympics of his career” and was hugely proud of his association with BC Children’s hospital due to his son’s ongoing care.
Shaun and Angela had two children together. Hailey (26 y/old) has just begun her career with the District of North Vancouver and Caden (22 y/old). Caden developed a debilitating Neurological condition when he was 15 months old. This unfortunate affliction has been particularly torturous to Caden (ongoing violent seizures and more near-death medical events than anyone cares to remember) and his loving parents. This among other things took their toll on the marriage which dissolved many years ago. Angela and Shaun put their differences aside and shared the care of Caden between them but everything changed on Oct 15th 2011. Shaun suffered a serious brain injury that began a chain of events that eventual prevented him from caring for Caden and so his son was placed in a full-care facility two years ago that could provide the full-time care needed to maintain his well being. Shaun’s condition continued to deteriorate and he was eventually unable to work. He was personally suffering with cognitive/memory issues and was forced to downsize his home and drive a modest car. Regrettably, Shaun was discovered deceased on Oct 9th,2019. The cause was directly attributed to his deteriorating brain injury, but his death was sudden and unexpected. Through Shaun’s decline, he had depleted his savings and exhausted his long-term disability coverage. He tried to appeal the decision but was unable to successfully accomplish this due to his cognitive shortfalls of late. He applied for a reduced early Pension, but sadly he passed before that help came. His decision to initiate this reduced his expected pension to 25% of what he might have been entitled to which further wounds his family's financial recovery. Shaun was also helping to top up Caden’s additional medication along with Angela that were not covered by the Gov’t.
Shaun died alone at 57 years of age. A very sad end for an amazing man who rallied support for a cancer-stricken friend years earlier when that gentleman needed help. Shaun was the foundation of his small family and his passing will have an ongoing negative effect for those that counted on him if we don’t help.
Where will your donation be spent?
-Funeral costs. There was no contingency as Shaun had depleted his financial resources. His modest assets cannot be sold until the probate period expires, so there’s truly no money to move things along.
- Legal advice stated that the probate period will take 6-12 months but that the mortgage must continue. Hailey has no way to maintain these costs as a single woman, recently out of University.
-Support of Caden’s ongoing medical condition and therapy.
In closing, please understand, I’ve never done a GFM request before. Those that cared about Shaun are genuinely in need of some help now. Please give us this help if you can.
Respectfully yours,
Carl Jamieson
