My wife Kristine and I are moving across the country to Michigan, away from our home of Austin, TX. The move is to be closer to more family and try to eventually buy a house for our son Tommy to grow up in. We are putting everything we have into this money-wise. It is a scary and drastic change from the life we started here but it’s something we need to do as we’re basically being priced out of our lives in this town. We want what’s best for our son.
Kristine and Tommy are already in Michigan and I’m in Austin for another few weeks packing up the rest of our life in preparation to move everything else there. While doing this, my car’s engine has completely bit the dust out of nowhere. I’m still paying this car off or else I’d just sell it. The quotes I’ve gotten on repairs of this magnitude are massive and we are already scraping the bottom of the barrel trying to manage this transition.
if I were not in the middle of this move(3 weeks from leaving) I’m sure I could manage a solution. If my wife were here, we could share a car to get to the jobs we both have. These are not viable options and I have very little time to figure this out/get the repairs done.Moving across the country without a car that i still have a couple years of payments on is not feasible whatsoever.
Normally, I would never ask for help from my friends and family for something that is squarely my problem. This is a time-sensitive emergency to help me continue providing for my family without financially crippling myself/us before starting our new lives. I have weighed multiple options and this is something for which I have no easy solution. Even selling all of my records and spare music gear will only get me a fraction of the way there, but I’m still doing those things anyway. They are just things, and my family is more important.
I hate asking for help, I am a hard worker and have gotten over humps worse than this in the past, but the timing and extremity of this problem means I have to ask for support.
