Sharon's Legacy: Supporting Guinea Pig Rescue & Rehome - UK
Donation protected
In memory of our dear Sharon, we would like to honor her passion and dedication by supporting the guinea pig rescue centre that she held so close to her heart. Instead of sending flowers, we ask that you consider donating to this cause that brought her so much joy. Sharon spent alot of time assisting Kate at the rescue, and it was a place where she found not just work, but laughter and fun. She loved sharing stories of their rescue adventures, whether it was helping care for the animals or embarking on trips to save guinea pigs in need. Your donation will help continue the important work that Sharon was so proud to support.
Some words from Kate Wright
"I currently have 46 guinea pigs in my care. At this time of year, many of them are with me for holiday boarding, which helps a bit with the costs. However, I have to carefully balance the space I have between taking in rescues and accommodating boarders. Fresh food is my biggest expense, with the weekly cost of vegetables exceeding £100. I also go through two bales of hay and shavings each week, costing £8 and £12 per bale, respectively. Additionally, I use two large sacks of food weekly, each costing over £20. Vet bills vary, but they are always a significant expense.
Unlike some rescues, I don’t quickly turn guinea pigs around for adoption. I take the time to get to know them, ensure they’re healthy, and find the best possible homes for them. This means I might have a guinea pig for anywhere from two weeks to much longer—often 4-6 weeks or more.
The demand for rescue services is constantly growing. Every day, I receive numerous requests to take in unwanted guinea pigs—via messages, emails, and phone calls. It’s heart-wrenching to have to turn them away because I’m already full. Many people assume that running the rescue is my full-time job, and honestly, it often feels like it is, given the time, effort, money, and emotional investment it requires. If only it paid enough to cover the costs, let alone provide a wage! But in reality, I also have a pretty full-on job outside of the rescue.
Right now, I don’t have any specific fundraising goals other than covering the general upkeep for the 46 guinea pigs I’m currently caring for. However, I do need to replace all my water bottles, get new weighing scales, and it would be great to put some funds into my rescue account at the vet’s for future expenses. Being in credit would alleviate the stress of unexpected bills, which I often end up paying out of my own pocket due to a lack of rescue funds.
Despite the challenges, I absolutely love running my rescue. It’s incredibly rewarding to help guinea pigs in need and be a stepping stone to their forever homes.
Sharon was a huge help with the rescue—she assisted with admin, answered emails, and organized my waiting list. She often accompanied me on trips to pick up needy guinea pigs, and we’d always grab a Starbucks on the way back. Sharon also helped me with my rabbit, Roger, who needed regular care. We used to joke about her coming over for cake and a cuppa in exchange for holding him during his grooming sessions. I like to think that she’s now looking after him up in heaven"
By donating to this guinea pig rescue in Sharon’s memory, you’re helping to continue the work she was so passionate about. Sharon found joy, laughter, and purpose in supporting the rescue, working alongside Kate to care for these animals and ensuring they found loving homes. The rescue was more than just a place of work for Sharon—it was a special part of her life that she cherished deeply. Your support will go directly towards the care of the guinea pigs currently at the rescue, covering the costs of food, supplies, and veterinary care.
This is a meaningful way to honor Sharon’s legacy, ensuring that the rescue she loved so much can continue to thrive. Thank you for helping us keep Sharon’s spirit alive through the work she cared for so deeply.
