Overnight Fatal Crash/Vehicle Pursuit

Last night, 9-24-23, at 11:00pm, Officers patrolling in the area of Lee’s Summit Rd and South Ave observed a red Ford F-150 truck with no license plate. An Officer attempted to stop the vehicle for the violation, and it fled Northbound on Lee’s Summit Rd. The pursuit continued to the area of Little Blue Parkway and Bundschu Rd, where officers terminated the pursuit due to the vehicle traveling Southbound in the Northbound lanes of Little Blue Parkway. Shortly after officers terminated the pursuit, the truck crashed into a northbound vehicle. The F-150 truck was later determined to be stolen. “The Independence Police Department is investigating a fatal crash involving two-vehicles. The crash occurred on 09-24-2023 at 11:07 PM near the intersection of S. Little Blue Pkwy. and E. Bundschu Rd. The crash occurred when a southbound Ford F-150 was traveling in on-coming lanes of northbound traffic on Little Blue Pkwy. and struck a northbound Dodge Avenger.

The driver of the Dodge Avenger suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced at the scene. The two occupants from the Ford F-150 were transported to a local hospital for their injuries. The driver of the Ford F-150 is in police custody at this time. The passenger was treated for minor injuries and released. She is also in police custody. The Ford F-150 was a reported stolen vehicle.

The driver of the Dodge Avenger was identified as Sharon I. Ault of Buckner, MO.

The crash remains under investigation by the Accident Investigation Unit."
