Sharon Assembly: Historic Church needs new roof, foundation
Donation protected
Located in the heart of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Sharon Assembly (a historic Black Church) isn't just a building; it's a place that's welcoming to everyone in the community. It’s a living testament to our community's history, resilience, and unwavering spirit, poised for a vibrant rebirth through our fundraiser.
Sharon Assembly Church (formerly Disney Chapel and the Rose of Sharon Assembly) held its first service on November 3rd, 1877. Originally established as an African Methodist Episcopal (AME) church, it was built by architect Robert P. Kelley and named after its founder, Rev. Richard Disney, an AME Bishop minister from the USA. Sharon Assembly Church was attended by members of the Black Community, who have resided in Yarmouth since before the abolition of slavery in the British Empire (1834) as well as anyone who wished to attend.
For 148 years, the church has served as a pillar, meeting place, and spiritual center for the Community. However, in 2012, it closed its doors due to a declining congregation and financial struggles. The Church is in need of a full restoration.
Today, the dedicated Board of Directors is determined to breathe new life into this Heritage Property. Our heartfelt mission is to restore the church as a community hub that offers hot meals to combat food insecurity and houses a museum to celebrate and preserve the profound history of Yarmouth's Black Community.
We recently placed 3rd place in the National Great Save competition and received $5,000 toward the full restoration of the church, however, this will not cover the entire costs. Therefore, we are asking the public's help to raise funds for the first part of this journey, as the roof is in dire need of repair. Any extra funds raised will be used to repair the foundation of the church.
