Ocean plastic pollution is one of the most important environmental issues of the 21st Century, it is a public health issue and what we do here in the high desert directly affects our oceans. Without our oceans, the human race would not survive, and a nonprofit in Flagstaff, Azulita Project , is creating a hub for ocean conservation and advocacy by tackling plastic pollution head-on.
Under the direction of local filmmaker Paul Perreault, 'The Last Straw ', a short animation about plastics in our oceans, was created, scripted, voiced, and musically scored by 12 students from Pine Forest School in Flagstaff Arizona. The film was made in three weeks and all the props were made using recycled materials.
Our film was sponsored by Azulita Project, Flagstaff Mountain Film Festival, Babbitt's Backcountry Outfitters, Around the Mountain Pediatric Dentistry and Professor George Gumerman Dean of NAU Honors College. The film was created for a national competition, Youth Making Ripples Film Festival . Investing in youth engagement on environmental issues is vital, and this competition is an outlet for K-12 students to use their creativity to help give voice to our oceans.
Our kids won the elementary/middle school category, and their film will go on tour with Youth Making Ripples to over 100 cities around the USA, screening to 1000's of people. Their achievement is very significant because an inland team of students has never won this competition. Their film debuted in Flagstaff at Flagstaff Mountain Film Festival in February of this year, screening to over 3000 people. We have submitted their film to the Patagonia Film Festival in Santa Monica, and it will join Save The Waves Coalition Film Festival global tour in 2018 for their 10 year Anniversary.
As Youth Making Ripples winners, the kids are invited to assist on a shark tagging expedition this summer in Florida, helping scientists in their research and in their endeavors to help save sharks and shark habitat. Our kids will be the first inland team of students to take part in this research, and they will join the ANGARI Foundation , one of the world's most renowned research institutes.
We are raising funds to offset the costs of 12 students and 3 adult chaperones to travel to Florida in August for a week. Funding will go towards airline travel, hotel, ground transportation and food. Please help us support a life-changing learning opportunity for these incredibly talented kids.
Student Director(s): Ramsey Perry-Stonebreaker, Ethan C. Owens, Wesley Phillips, Alida Perry-Stonebreaker, Abby Henderson, Cedar Bontrager, Lilliana Machina Roccaforte, Wyatt Giovale, Griffin Bontrager, Neela McCrosky, Liesa McCrosky, Andrew Miller
