The day Tamara called me, I knew something wasn't right...we have always joked and promised to tell each other bad news in person, but this year I moved away making things rather difficult to do so. Her voice less cheery, her disposition quieter and she became quite nervous when she said "Andre, there's something I have to tell you..." if you know Tamara at all, this isn't her, and I started to cry.
That was the day one of my best friends and "big sister" told me she was about to go head to head with a type of Breast Cancer, called Invasive Ductal Carcinoma.
September of 2020 she noticed a small cyst, After a visit to the doctor, she went for an ultrasound and a mammogram. A cyst it was, but behind that cyst there was a tumour.
As we are all well aware this is now the beginning of something completely life changing. Tamara is a super human momma to her beautiful daughter Chloe and has more tenacity and strength than most of us on a good day. She's a wonderfully independent woman and never backs down, and we know this is one fight she will never quit. However, as strong and independent as she is, doing this on your own is not easy. Having to leave work, ask for help and count on other people is not something Tamara does often.
October came and it was the month of tests, a biopsy and a diagnosis. Followed by November and of course accompanied by more tests and appointments. December was surgery month. Tamara has now gone through a Lumpectomy and has started daily radiation in Hamilton. Thankfully she is not going to have to go through chemotherapy! They caught it early and it was small.
I would have started this Go fund me earlier, but she is a little strong sometimes..haha!! We can all use a hand up, especially during these hard times. Tamara is caring for Chloe on her own, going to appointments out of town daily, trying to maintain her household, and keep some sort of normal in their life all while being on Sick pay. (which all of us know, doesn't cut it.) Cancer is hard. Really hard. Finances are the last thing she should be thinking about but they are unfortunately at the top of her list.
Here's the thing. I love this girl a lot. If I could give her all the money in the world to make this journey less stressful, or ask for this to not have happened, I would. However, we cannot change what is happening. All we can do is have hope that this will be her one and only battle, have faith that she is in good hands and send her all the love that we can give.
