Hi, everyone! My name is Eric Miralles and I’m making this GoFundMe on behalf of my aunt, Theresa Word.

Theresa has been a nurse for 25+ years helping people across the country from California, New York, Florida, Minnesota, and The Carolina’s just to name a few. She has always been such a positive, upbeat light in everyone’s lives. Ready to laugh or dance at the drop of a hat. She’s our families go-to for medical advice and is always the first to help in any way she can. Well this time it’s Theresa that’s needing a little help.

A few weeks ago Theresa went into the ER with what she thought was a painful kidney stone. After some scans the doctors found out that her pain was not, in fact, coming from a kidney stone but rather a large tumor that was sitting on her kidney. They decided to speak to an oncologist and get more scans done to check the prognosis of the tumor and to see if it had spread. Unfortunately it had. The doctors told her that she has Stage 4 renal cancer that has already started to spread to her lungs. They decided that her first round of chemo will be on December 6th.

As luck would have it, Theresa just recently started a brand new nursing position in Raleigh, NC, where she commutes to from her home in Myrtle Beach, SC. Fortunately she was able to acquire insurance after 30 days but was declined a medical leave of absence since she just started. Consequently, this also ties her treatment to the Raleigh area making her round trip travel time for chemo around 6 hours. If she chooses to get treated closer to home it would cost 50% of the treatment price. Which brings us to the reason behind our being on GoFundMe- driving 6 hours round trip, not fully being able to work due to illness and chemo, as well as just living and supporting a family and paying bills and buying groceries and paying for gas- it all becomes rather expensive very quickly. Our family has never been one of means- but what we weren’t blessed with financially we make up for in love for each other and the drive and gumption to make sure we all get what we need, so we are sharing this with everyone on social media in hopes that you can help Theresa and her family in this trying time. The last thing any of us want to think of right now is money, but unfortunately, in situations like this, we have to ask for assistance.
