Shannon's Homeward Bound Journey

Hi!
I'm Shannon, an early career marine scientist and Postdoctoral Research Fellow within the Centre for Marine Ecosystem Research at Edith Cowan University.
I loves corals and coastlines, and I am extremely passionate about exploring and conserving our oceans.
This year I have been selected to participate in Homeward Bound - a year-long leadership program for women in STEMM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine) that culminates in a face-to-face experience in Tanzania. During Homeward Bound I look forward to connecting with a global network of likeminded women, and hope to gain the skills and confidence to communicate my research in relevant and meaningful ways that will inspire other young women in STEMM.
To secure my spot in this program, I need your support!
I am fundraising to cover costs associated with the intensive program in Tanzania – which will include ~$12,000 for the program itself, ~$3000 for return flights. Any help, big or small, is greatly appreciated!
Please read on to find out why this program is so important, not only to me but to the role of women as leaders for the future of our planet.
What is Homeward Bound?
Homeward Bound is a global leadership initiative that aims to give 10,000 women in STEMM by 2036 the skill and will to lead with impact and influence for the greater good.
The program will provide me with the visibility, and the leadership and strategic capabilities to demonstrate a new model of leadership, creating better outcomes for our planet. I’m excited to be part of this unique initiative. You can learn more about Homeward Bound here.
Why women?
Homeward Bound is an all-female program to draw attention to, and improve, the low representation of women in leadership positions in science, and in many other disciplines. Currently, women comprise 60% of university graduates, but only 10-20% of
them make it to senior decision-making roles or professional-level academia. You can read more about some cold hard facts impacting women in leadership here.
Why STEMM?
Quite simply, because these fields touch every aspect of our present and forecast future.
Thank you for reading and for your generous support!
