Shannon's Trip to Thailand

A little more than a year ago, I surveyed the small village of Kageyo, Rwanda. What I remember most were the malnourished children wearing the remnants of what used to be a sports jersey or a Sleeping Beauty nightgown. I remember looking at a vegetable garden, no bigger than an average living room, that was used to feed the entire school of children. I remember the teacher in the classroom who used an old recording device to teach the children English. I saw so many needs there that were being very meagerly met, or not met at all. My dream is to meet those needs, not meagerly, but abundantly. It’s to see the children wearing clothing made in their own country with words and pictures they can understand on it. It’s to see that vegetable garden in every family’s backyard. It’s to see the teacher educated well enough to teach the children English from her own mouth. I long to share the good news of Jesus Christ with impoverished communities around the world by meeting their needs and helping them sustain their communities. 

I have been accepted to do a Discipleship Training School (DTS) with Youth With a Mission (YWAM). YWAM offers many different types of schools in a variety of locations, and the one that I have chosen is specifically focused on doing business as mission, and it will be located in Chiang Mai, Thailand. I want to gain firsthand knowledge on how to do business overseas and this DTS will give me the opportunity to do that. During the "lecture phase", my team and I will be visiting and doing case studies on various local businesses. We will also be hearing from business owners and teachers on topics such as the Biblical Foundations of Business, Business as Mission Best Practices, and Living and Working Cross-Culturally. In our "outreach phase", we will spend time serving the community and sharing Christ by helping existing ministries involved with businesses, orphanages, and church plants. I leave no later than January 14th, 2016!
