Shango Shakur Sweet 2024 Memorial Scholarship
Donation protected
This is now our 8th year of raising funds for the Shango Shakur Sweet Memorial Scholarship which provides supplemental funds needed by HS seniors graduating from underserved schools, but have nonetheless achieved acceptance to attend a four year college or university.
Shango’s life was tragically curtailed at the age of 36 in late 2007 during what was to be a routine outpatient foot surgery. While expecting to return home the same day, Shango would never return home. During his surgery Shango slipped (initially undetected) into a coma from which he never awoke. He spent more than eight years in a coma before transitioning in December of 2015.
Shango was a dynamic high school student who, despite early challenges, emerged as a leader within the high school and its community. During his enrollment Shango was a member, and in several cases a leader, of many high school clubs, including: Science Club, Math Club, Spanish Club, Student Council, SADD, Varsity Football, Marching and Concert Bands (trumpet), Head of Peer Leadership and Key Club President. Shango had the honor of being selected and attending the Governor’s School, along with other accomplished high school students from across the state of New Jersey. He was voted Senior (male) Most Likely to Succeed and Most School Spirit.
In memory of Shango Shakur Sweet, a Class of 1989 graduate of Asbury Park High School, NJ, The Shango Shakur Sweet Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually in early June to deserving Asbury Park graduating seniors of APHS, or other local high schools. The scholarship supports the recipient's attendance at a 4-year accredited college or university. The award(s) is a one-time non-renewable payment in an amount up to $2,500.
The scholarship was initially established to recognize a graduating high school student(s) who had demonstrated a combination of scholarship, leadership and community service. The scholarship was subsequently expanded to include eligible recipients beyond Asbury Park High School. The recipient must have a reputation for integrity, leadership and service.
