Hi, I'm writing this on behalf of Shane Sharkey, the heart and soul behind Castro Valley School of Music (CVSOM). He doesn’t know I’m doing this—because Shane isn’t one to ask for help. Instead, he’s the guy who’s always giving it.
For the past 12 years, Shane has poured his energy, resources, and heart into CVSOM. His vision? To create a space where kids grow through music—gaining confidence, building emotional resilience, and discovering joy through creativity. He believes music can change lives, and every day, he lives that belief. I've seen him take money out of his own pocket to match a jar of tips for his students to encourage them to continue practicing music. I've seen him gifting a musical instrument to a student who was sad to move away. I see kids giving him hugs because Mr. Sharkey teaches with his heart.
Like so many small businesses, CVSOM faced tough challenges during COVID. While the school remained open and committed to its students, the financial strain has been real. Shane has been quietly using income from his other business to keep the school afloat—covering rent, payroll, and even helping families who can’t afford lessons. But it’s taken a toll.
Now, CVSOM is on the cusp of recovery. Enrollment is growing again. The music is flowing. But to truly thrive, the school needs a bit of support from the community it has loved and served for over a decade.
Here’s what your donation will help with:
A new school sign to help attract new students and increase visibility
Marketing efforts to reach families who want to introduce their kids to music
Help covering rent during this critical transition back to growth
This is about investing in a place where kids discover who they are. It’s about keeping the music alive in Castro Valley.
If you’ve ever seen a child light up after playing their first song—or been touched by a teacher who goes the extra mile—then you already understand what CVSOM means to our community.
Let’s give Shane and the school the runway they need to keep inspiring the next generation of musicians, dreamers, and leaders.
