This account has been created by family, in support of Shane Ponder, his wife & their children. Shane and his wife, Veronica, have 3 young children under the age of 10, who are getting ready to go back to school. Over the last several weeks, Shane has been faced with medical illness, leaving him unable to work and support his family. After experiencing some numbness in his lower limbs, he was hospitalized and received a challenging diagnosis-- Guillain-Barré Syndrome. GBS is a rare disorder in which a person's own immune system damages the nerve cells, causing muscle weakness and sometimes paralysis. GBS can cause symptoms that last for a few weeks or several months. At this time, Shane cannot feel or move his arms & legs. He is in the process of being transferred from a local hospital to a larger, better equipped facility in Houston to receive the best possible care from doctors specializing in this disorder.
